    My Dear Friends,

It's been quite a while since something like what I am about to share has happened.

I was out on a wander up on a hill beside Lake Zurich. As I look into the far distant snow capped mountains of the Alps over the lake I notice the ripples that the sail boats make, they look like a V starting from the front point of the boat and going far behind passed it. You all probably have seen this in some sort of a way.

Next I noticed more ripples, but no boat. There were a bunch of things on or in the water that made these V-shape ripples, all going the same directions. I could not recognize the source of the ripples, so I went closer down to the lake, and as you guessed, yes: There is a flock of ducks on their way to the nearby reed belt.

So, I could not see the ducks from far above, but I was able to see the ripple it made.

Did you ever notice something that others seemed unable to notice?

    Today's outdoor activity:

Look for species, groups of species, features of landscape and other things, plants, animals, insects or land features, something from nature that tells you something about the land, or something about the land that tells you about the life that could be there.

Share your find with your partner. Listen to what they already know.

    Journal Questions:

What are the things that you notice in your yard, or landscape, big or small, that are associated or linked to one another?

What bird in your area might tell you about water beyond your sight? (Think of Jon’s story of the red winged blackbirds)

What group of plants indicates the presence of an animal you haven’t seen there yet? (like oak trees attracting squirrels)

Can you name a scent, that tells you a certain animal is near or you are in a certain landscape?

Can you name a scent that tells you about a change in the season, ecology or weather?
